History of the Magdalene House

In the Spring of 2001, the Vestry of Emmanuel Parish designated the vision for Magdalene House a one of its Mission Initiatives, and this was affirmed by the congregation.  Later that year, an ecumenical workshop was held for those who share concern for family members of those incarcerated and who are moved by vocation to provide Holy Hospitality, a comfortable place to lay heads, good food, some transportation and a lot of love and concern.  From that point, the ministry began to take real shape.

Teams traveled to Alderson, West Virginia in 2002 to experience such a hospitality house in full operation.

In the summer 0f 2002, the Vestry of Emmanuel offered financial support for the purchase, repair and equipping of a house, and numerous congregations have lent material, financial and prayerful support since that time.

The property at 206 Columbia St. was purchased in early 2003, a mission work crew from Baltimore came in that summer, and over that winter and following spring, the house was made ready.
